Are you introverted or extroverted?

You have probably heard about extroversion and introversion. Are you sure you know all the details? If you do not, no worries, we will cover the basics in this article too.

These terms originate from one particular academic named Carl Jung.

Introvert

Introversion is oriented in our inward world. These people have usually a close circle of friends. They might need to recharge their batteries by doing enjoyable things alone. An introvert is stereotypically going to enjoy reading, drawing, meditating, or writing. Being an introvert does not necessarily mean the person is shy. This personal setting is just a preferation. Another misconception would be, that they do not enjoy other people's company. Some might like spending time with friends, they are just more interested in their solitary activities. It is about how they relieve stress and communicate. They seem to commonly delve into their mind, and reflect on themself. Reserved people are likely to analyze their thoughts before speaking. While gathering information or working, they are probably going to do extensive research and get into the depth of the task ahead. Some might take more time to complete their finding though.

Extrovert

Extroversion revels in the outside world. Extroverts desire more stimulation from their surrounding. They might live for the wild parties. They tend to thrill in human interaction. They are likely to be assertive or aggressive. They gain energy from hanging out with people. Usually, they like working in a group. An extrovert does not find it too rewarding to do some activities alone. While working they are able to work fast, but usually find smattering knowledge.

Ambiversion

Most people are not extremely introverted or extroverted, therefore most people resonate with the term Ambiversion. In current theories, self-efficient and boldness are conceptualized into a scale. This term would be someone, who is exactly in between.

Regional Variation

Counties with religious backgrounds tend to be more introverted. That is prevalent especially if we look into counties associated with orthodox Christianity or Buddhism. (Laney, 2002)

Research also supports the theory, that islanders seem to be more introverted. Island populations with ancestral lineage, happen to be more reticent in comparison with recent arrivals. Data from over 7000 individuals were used in this study. (Fulmer, Gelfand, Kruglanski, Kim-Prieto, Diener, Pierro, Higgins, 2010)

Many social experts believe that America is quite extroverted. (Diamond, 2008) Less populated states (Alaska, Maryland, or Washington) are more introverted. On the other hand, these states gravitate more toward extroversion: Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, Florida, Georgia, etc. (Rentfrow, Gosling, Potter, 2008) Particular groups might be more introverted. Attorneys are a great example of that. The prevalence of introverted lawyers was measured to be between 60 to 90% depending on their specialization.

We will look into this topic a little more in another article. You can look forward to hearing more about these types and their relation to happiness, measuring methods, discussed issues, and different scientific views.
